In December 2020, the Opinion Research Business (ORB) International engaged in a qualitative study to examine Mozambican perceptions around the insurgency in Cabo Delgado, including identifying the insurgents and their goals as well as perceptions of external assistance needed to quell the ongoing threat.
This research contributes to the larger ongoing research agenda on countering and preventing violent extremism (CVE/PVE), community vulnerability and resilience, and security assistance.
Notably, perception work on ASWJ is extremely limited; conducting on the ground and face-to-face work within the region itself with micro-local participants helps to fill these gaps. All data gathered underwent our rigorous data quality measures to ensure accuracy and verification.
As governments continue to provide external assistance for internal threats from violent extremist organizations, more research is needed to discern who citizens hold accountable for security, and how different security responses- from private corporations, governments, and external actors are seen in everyday life.
