Research Executive / Senior Research Executive

ORB International wishes to hire an additional Research Executive / Senior Research Executive. We seek a proactive, self-motivated individual to help us serve our growing portfolio of clients.  This is a superb opportunity for an ambitious person with excellent research skills and an interest in combining both qualitative and quantitative research in an international setting.


This position offers the opportunity to work on public opinion research of citizens across Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.  Our work covers some of the most important contemporary issues (security, democracy, development, etc.); this role will suit anyone with a keen interest in international politics and a background in research.

This position will feature foreign travel, and we expect a high comfort level with travel to non-Western countries and cultures; candidates must demonstrate a willingness to travel to a variety of locations across Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.   They must also possess sound quantitative and qualitative research credentials, as the position involves direct responsibility for the delivery of robust and high quality work.  The ability to understand the strategic use of research and write clear and concise research proposals is also important.

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing international public opinion surveys and focus groups.
  • Analyzing the results of quantitative and qualitative research by looking at the relationship between public opinion and political, military, economic, social, and development-related issues in the region.
  • Reporting results from qualitative and quantitative research through clear, concise presentations and written reporting.
  • Writing proposals.
  • Keeping abreast of relevant news in regions of study.

We will be looking for candidates who possess all of the following types of experience:

  • High comfort level with data (using Excel) and excellent writing skills are necessary.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of public opinion polling, including developing survey questionnaires, drawing a sample, and assessing the quality of resulting data is preferred but not necessary.  Experience managing or previously conducting field interviews or focus groups is also preferred.
  • Experience statistically analyzing public opinion data with Excel, Stata or SPSS and writing reports or presentations based on this analysis is preferred but not necessary.
  • General knowledge of the politics, economics, and societies of Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
  • Foreign language fluency –French is preferred (Arabic and Spanish are also helpful).

While the above qualities are highly desired, they are not requirements.

MONITORING & EVALUATION SPECIALIST-Consultant to possible full-time

Opinion Research Business International


ORB International seeks a Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist for its Charlottesville, VA office.  We are looking for a seasoned research professional to provide technical and organizational leadership in general program monitoring and evaluation for ORB’s various international projects. The M&E Specialist will support project design and learn from and make decisions based upon monitoring and evaluation data.

Major Responsibilities:

From planning and executing to analyzing and reporting, the M&E Specialist is essential to successful functioning at ORB.  Establishing performance measures, collecting and analyzing performance information, planning and managing evaluations and using the performance information for decision-making are integral to this position. Other responsibilities include the following:

  • Advise teams in designing and planning for evaluations, special studies, and assessments.
  • Provide input in the the design, implementation and dissemination of evaluations, special studies and assessments.
  • Assist teams to select data collection methods for adequate monitoring and evaluation of implementing partners’ performance and of the program as a whole (these methods may include filed visits, quarterly reports, specialized surveys and other sources of information).  Assist teams in reviewing these methods and making improvements to their monitoring and evaluation.
  • Keep up to date with policy and procedure documents in the areas of monitoring and evaluation to align with the most current policies and requirements.
  • Contribute to planning of new activities that support the desired results; this includes providing input into assessments, project appraisal documents, and scopes of work for new activities.
  • Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of activities; this may involve reviewing work plans, quarterly reports, participating in field visits, initiating regular portfolio reviews and contributing to program evaluations.
  • Support the preparation of all agency-level reports such as performance plans and reports, final analysis and recommendations.

Qualifications Required:

Education: A Master’s degree or higher in international development, monitoring and evaluation, the social sciences, economics, or other relevant disciplines.

Prior Work Experience: At least five to seven years of professional experience performing a monitoring & evaluation role with some USAID and/or State Department experience required. 

Sphere of Experience/Interest: Professional experience working in one or more of the following sectors: education, health, and/or social justice.

Language Proficiency: French is a plus but not required.

Job Knowledge: Demonstrated ability in data analysis (SPSS specifically), project design, and monitoring & evaluation of development activities.  Experience developing results frameworks, logical frameworks, or similar tools for project design is required. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in monitoring and evaluating programs—including indicator development, study designing, and data analysis—in multiple sectors.  Experience managing grants or contracts is also highly desired.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to summarize disparate information in a clear and concise manner
  • Excellent research and data collection methodology skills
  • Ability to create organizational work plans based on higher-level goals
  • Skills in supporting staff with a variety of levels of knowledge and capabilities
  • Strong organizational skills in order to balance competing priorities
  • Ability to work independently to efficiently meet deadlines 
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Oral and written communication skills to deal effectively with mid and high level partner contacts, the host government, and the local communities.  
  • Excellent computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet programs and data base management
